Family Literacy
There are a variety of definitions of family literacy. This one is excerpted from 'Family Literacy Focus 2002', at a presentation made by Kim Sutherland.
Encompasses the many ways parents, children, and extended family members use oral language and print material at home and in their community
Occurs naturally during the routine of daily living
Some activities happen spontaneously, other are intentional
Literacy-rich home environments offer children:
- Lots of meaningful conversation
- Songs, rhymes
- Games
- Opportunities to listen/tell stories
- Books, magazines
- Materials to write and draw with
- Regular trips to the library
- Outings
- Lots of fun and positive attention
- IF IT'S NOT FUN, IT'S NOT LEARNING
Family Literacy Day
Family Literacy Day was created by a literacy organization called ABC Canada. It is a national initiative that promotes the importance of reading and learning together as a family and is celebrated every year on January 27th.
