ELS - Checklist Information

The Benefits of using the Early Literacy Checklis

First and foremost, the checklist will identify strengths and gaps in your program and will direct program development. The Checklist can encourage new ways of thinking about accessing resources beyond your program.

Early Years practitioners are also encouraged to use the Checklist with new staff to orient them to your program, or the Checklist can be used as a refresher in a professional development capacity with current staff.

The Checklist will also prove useful in working with parents. Parents can use the Checklist to assess the program and help them understand how their children acquire literacy skills through a range of materials and experiences offered in your program.

Other benefits to programs in using the Early Literacy Checklist include:

  • supporting planning and evaluation (staff and program)
  • supporting proposals for new or enhanced funding and/or partnerships
