Community Mobilization
The Three-Year EDI Community Process model was initiated to mobilize the community to work together to address the high rate of child vulnerability (35%) in our community.
This model was presented to the community at the January 11, 2008 - Bringing the Community Together for the Children event, when the child vulnerability rate, for our community, based on the 2005-06 Early Development Instrument (EDI)
results, was 32% (Ontario provincial vulnerability was 27%). Based on the last round of EDI results (2008-09), the child vulnerability rate for our community is now at 35%.
As part of the model, Step 2: Determine Area of Focus has been completed and the deliverable - a Community Needs report - has been finalized and signed-off by agencies in the community; the report is awaiting presentation to the Thunder Bay and District Best Start Network.
Step 3: Issue Call For Proposals is awaiting commencement.
In addition, as a result of the Business Leaders for Children Luncheon
with guest speaker Charles S. Coffey, O.C., a task force was formed, consisting of Thunder Bay's strategic for-profit business leaders. This task force will help to create the Champion of Children Council.

Bringing the Community Together for the Children
Jim Grieve - Director of Education for the Peel District School Board Community Mobilization - Presentation, Audio, Q&A |
Did you know . . . 35% of the children in our community are vulnerable in at least one aspect of their development, by senior kindergarten? (2008-09 Early Development Instrument (EDI) results) . . . According to Dr. Clyde Hertzman, Director HELP-UBC, a child vulnerability rate above 10% is biologically unnecessary. |
