Communities Together for Children

Business Case for Early Childhood Development

Across Canada, more than a quarter of children are vulnerable before they even get to school. Most vulnerable children are not poor. This high rate of early vulnerability imposes social and economic costs.  - Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP)

In our community, over one-third (35%) of the children are vulnerable

in at least one aspect of their development, by senior kindergarten.

Fact:  Early childhood development is a prime time investment opportunity for

society, providing greater returns than any other period in life.

Business Leaders for Children Luncheon - guest speaker: Charles S. Coffey, O.C.

Mr. Coffey addressed Thunder Bay's strategic business leaders and spoke to the importance of investing in early childhood development with a focus on the connection between economic and social prosperity.

Presentation:  Think Small, Act Big - Investing in Children is Good for Business (45 minute video)

Call to Action: Establish a Champion of Children Council Task Force  (22 minute video)

As a result of this luncheon, a task force was formed consisting of Thunder Bay's strategic for-profit business leaders.  This task force will help to create the Champion of Children Council.

The Champion of Children Council is a key component of the Three-Year EDI Community Process model that is being implemented.  In addition, as part of this model, a Community Needs report has been finalized and will be used, together with the Council, to commence the implementation of Step 3:  Issue Call For Proposals.  This will enable us to start to fill gaps that children in our community are falling through.
